LIST 1 - BIRTHS - FATHERS SURNAME ORDER

There  were  6,081 births recorded during this  decade  which  is almost
double the number for the previous decade.

The  information  recorded  for  each  child  includes:
          date of birth
          date of baptism
          Christian name
          father's Christian name
          father's family name
father's year of arrival in the colony
father's ship of arrival in the colony
father's status upon arrival in the colony
          mother's Christian name
          mother's maiden name
mother's year of arrival in the colony
mother's ship of arrival in the colony
mother's status upon arrival in the colony
parent's civil status at the time of the child's birth
parent's marital status at the time of the child's birth
          parent's year & country/church of marriage where
applicable
          date of death
          reference identifier

The births are listed primarily in alphabetical order on the name of
the  father and then secondly in chronological order  on  the date
of birth for family groups.

The  date  of  death is an  complimentary  piece  of  information derived
from my earlier publication "Born in the English  Colony of New South
Wales" further details of which can be found in that publication.  In
some instances the date of death is unknown  but the year of departure
is recorded, becoming 'dead' to the  colony as it were.

With  regard  to  the fathers, the identities of  73%  have  been found.
The 98 children whose fathers are unknown are not recorded on this
list. There were 3,009 convicts or former convicts (49%), 647  were
soldiers or former soldiers (11%) and  982  came  free (16%). Finally
there were 287 colonial born fathers (5%).

With  regard  to  the children 50.6% were  male  and  49.4%  were female,
59.1% were legitimate, 26.5% were illegitimate.

There  are  160 duplicate and 8 triplicate entries on  the  list. These
have  been  preserved in order to be able  to  locate  the relevant
baptism on duplicated church register.

Almost two thirds (64%) of these births were found in the various
church  baptismal  registers in existence at the  time.  In  just under
a  fifth  (18%) the information is  derived  from  Norfolk Island
records  and  from  the  Pioneer  Register  Project.  The remainder
come  from  the early colonial Musters  and  the  1828 Census of New
South Wales, from burial records whose parents were not  able  to be
identified, and from records  for  Van  Diemen's Land.
