LIST 2 - BIRTHS - MOTHERS SURNAME ORDER

 
 
This list contains the same information as in List 1 with the 
exception that it is ordered on the mothers name rather than the 
fathers. There are 4,269 births listed because the 1,315 cases where 
the mother's surname is unknown and the 494 cases where the mother 
arrived as a married women without her maiden name being known have 
not been included.
 
The information recorded for each child includes: 
 date of birth
 date of baptism 
 Christian name
 mother's Christian name
 mother's maiden name
 mother's year of arrival in the colony
 mother's ship of arrival in the colony
 mother's status upon arrival in the colony
  father's Christian name 
 father's family name 
 father's year of arrival in the colony 
 father's ship of arrival in the colony 
 father's status upon arrival in the colony 
 parent's civil status at the time of the child's birth
 parent's marital status at the time of the child's birth
 parent's year & country/church of marriage where 
applicable 
 date of death
 reference identifier
 
The births are listed primarily in alphabetical order on the name of 
the mother and then secondly in chronological order on the date 
of birth for family groups.
 
The date of death is an complimentary piece of information derived 
from my earlier publication "Born in the English Colony of New South 
Wales" further details of which can be found in that publication. In 
some instances the date of death is unknown but the year of departure 
is recorded, becoming 'dead' to the colony as it were.
 
With regard to the mothers, the identities of 71% have been found. 
There were 2,025 convicts or former convicts (34%), 1,354 came free 
(22%) and 1,193 colonial born (20%). 
 
With regard to the children 52.4% were male and 47.6% were female, 
40.7% were legitimate, 46.0% were illegitimate.
 
There are 160 duplicate and 8 triplicate entries on the list. These 
have been preserved in order to be able to locate the relevant 
baptism on the duplicated church register.
