LIST 21 - MARRIAGES - ST JOHNS LAUNCESTON
The first marriage was performed at St Johns on the 26th February 1811
by the Rev Robert Knopwood. Up until the end of 1820 there were 93
marriages performed at St Johns.
The information recorded for each marriage is as follows:
date
groom
family name
Christian name
year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of marriage
age at marriage
bride
family name
Christian name
year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of marriage
age at marriage
reference number
The marriages are listed in chronological order.
During the Rev Knopwood's first visit to Port Dalrymple in 1811 he
performed 23 marriages. The Rev Knopwood next visited the
settlement in 1814 when he performed eight marriages. Of the 41
marriages recorded for 1819, 24 have no exact date but it is assumed
Rev Knopwood visited the settlement in January of that year. In
November 1819 the Rev John Youl arrived from Sydney to take up the
incumbrance of the parish.
As explained above the age at marriage is a derived figure.
It should be pointed out that in the original register the only
information recorded was; date, family name and Christian name of both
bride and groom. Information in the register but not included
here includes; the officiating minister, names of the witnesses to
the marriage and who gave consent to the marriage (the father to
colonial born brides and the governor to convicts). Interested
readers are urged to consult the originals.
The reference number would direct the reader to the entry in the
original parish register. It should be noted however that since the
Rev Knopwood was ministering to both St Davids Hobart and St Johns
Launceston the reference numbers are intertwined. Thus in 1811 they
run 073 to 095, in 1814 they run 159 to 166, in 1819 326 to 366 and
in 1820 430 to 450.
To locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical search on
the name would be made on Lists 15 or 16 using code "SJL" from which
the date of marriage would be retrieved, secondly using the
appropriate date, the marriage would then be located on this list.
