LIST 9 - MARRIAGES - ST JOHNS PARRAMATTA

There  were  216  marriages performed at  St  Johns  during  this 'decade'.  The  first  being
on the 5th  September  1790  between convicts  John  Randall and Mary Butler. There  were
on  average almost two marriages per month.

The information recorded for each marriage is as follows:
               date
               groom
                    family name
                    Christian name
                    year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of marriage
                    age at marriage
               bride
                    family name
                    Christian name
                    year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of marriage
                    age at marriage
               reference number

The marriages are listed in chronological order.

It  should be pointed out that in the original register the  only information recorded was;
date, family name and Christian name of both  bride  and  groom.  Information in  the  register
but  not included  here includes; the officiating minister, names  of  the witnesses  to
the marriage and who gave consent to  the  marriage (the  father  to  colonial  born  brides
and  the  governor   to convicts). Interested readers are urged to consult the originals.

With  regard  to the grooms; the arrival details of a  24  remain unknown.  There  were  174
convicts or former  convicts,  8  were Marines  or  former Marines, 5 were New South Wales
Corpsmen  of former  New South Wales Corpsmen, 4 came free.

Antoine  L'Andre  arrived  as a French prisoner of  war  to  help establish viticulture in
the colony.

With  regard  to  the brides; the arrival details  of  18  remain unknown whilst Ann Knowland
was a convict but her ship of arrival is unknown. There were 194 convicts or former convicts
and 4 came free.

As explained above the age at marriage is a derived figure.

The reference number would direct the reader to the entry in  the original parish register.
The sequencing of the reference numbers is not totally in order, making one wonder just how
the  register was compiled.

The descendants of William Whiting claim he married Mary Smith in 1795 at Parramatta but
there is no record of this marriage.  Mary Smith  is reputed to arrived on board the 'Pitt'
in 1792  but  in what capacity is unknown.

To  locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical  search on  the  name  would be
made on List 6 from  which  the  date  of marriage would be retrieved, secondly using the
appropriate date, the marriage would then be located on this list.
