LIST 30 - MARRIAGES - ST JOHNS PARRAMATTA

During  this  decade  there were 542 marriages  performed  at  St Johns, twelve
less than the previous decade. On average about one marriage every week.

The information recorded for each marriage is as follows:
               date
               groom
                    family name
                    Christian name
                    year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of marriage
                    age at marriage
               bride
                    family name
                    Christian name
                    year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of marriage
                    age at marriage
               comments
               officiating minister
               reference number

The marriages are listed in chronological order.

St  Johns register routinely recorded the marriage  date,  family name  and
Christian  name of both bride and  groom,  age,  civil status  and  ship  of
arrival of marriage  participants  and  the officiating  minister.  Information
in  the  register  but   not included  here includes; names of the witnesses
to  the  marriage and who gave consent to the marriage (the father to colonial
born brides  and  the governor to convicts).  Interested  readers  are urged
to consult the originals.

In 1826 a new printed marriage register was commenced and  whilst this  made
the  reading of the  information  much  easier,  such details as ship of arrival,
status and age were only occasionally recorded.

At least in the case of the brides, by noting the information  in the  "with
the  consent  of"  field,  "the  governor/master"  or "parents/father/guardians"
at  least  indicates  if  she  was  a convict or colonial born.

The  Comments column occasionally records the place of  residence of the groom,
even less frequently of the bride, if they  resided outside of Parramatta. In
a few cases the occupation of the groom is listed.

The  chaplains and ministers assisting the Rev Samuel Marsden  in his parish
each year included:

1821: George Augustus Middleton, Richard Hill
1822: George Augustus Middleton, Richard Hill, Thomas Hassall, Robert
Cartwright
1823: Thomas Hassall
1824: unknown
1825: unknown
1826: Thomas Hassall, John Espie Keane
1827: Frederick Wilkinson, James Norman, Charles P N Wilton
1828: Thomas Hassall, John Vincent, Charles P N Wilton
1829: John Vincent, Charles P N Wilton, Thomas Hassall, Frederick Wilkinson
1830: Thomas Hassall, Charles P N Wilton, William Yate, John Vincent

The reference number would direct the reader to the entry in  the original  parish
register. In this decade the numbers  run  from "1027".  Regrettably  the pages
covering the period May  1823  to December 1825 appear to be missing from the
microfilm held in the National  Library  in Canberra. Fortunately  the  Kerrison
James index   still   covers  this  period  but   without   identifying particulars.
These entries run from "3125" to "3706" but they are not consecutive.

After  the new registers were introduced the reference  numbering system  was
reset each new year. In 1826 and 1827 it was  set  to "1", but in 1828 the year
began with "372", 1829 with "639"  then back to "1" in 1830.

To  locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical  search on the name
would be made on Lists 27 or 28 using code "SJP" from which the date of marriage
would be retrieved, secondly using the appropriate  date,  the marriage would
then be  located  on  this list.
