LIST 55 - BURIALS - ST MATTHEWS WINDSOR

There  were  408  burials performed at St  Matthews  during  this decade. There
was on average almost one burial each week.

The information recorded for each burial is as follows:
               burial date
               death date
               Christian name
               family name
               age
               abode
civil status at time of death
               year and ship of arrival
               comments
               officiating minister
               reference number

Various miscellaneous remarks in the register have been  recorded as  'end-notes'
at  the  bottom of the  list.  Happily  for  the historian these notes are quite
extensive in many cases.

The burials are listed in chronological order.

The  Rev John Cross continued his chaplaincy until  January  1828 when  he  was
replaced  by the Rev  Elijah  Smith  who  was  the incumbent  until  December
1828 when the Rev Joseph  Docker  took over for the rest of the decade. The Rev
Matthew Meares performed three  burials in 1825, the Rev Charles Wilton performed
one  in 1829 and the Roman Catholics performed two in 1830.

The information recorded in the register included; name, date  of death, age,
abode, status (free, convict, came free & free - came to the colony a convict)
and ship of arrival with the  occasional cause of death. In January 1826 with
the introduction of the  new pre-printed forms the date of death and status upon
arrival  were no longer recorded but the deceased's occupation was recorded and
in  the case of minors often the occupation of the father.  Women had recorded
whether; single, married or widowed.

For  the colonial born their year of birth and parents names  are recorded in
the ship of arrival column.

The  burial of Sarah Kirk in January 1826 is a duplicate of  that in St James
Pitt Town.

The  reference  number would direct the reader  to  the  relevant entry  in the
original source document. The numbering system  was re-initialized  in 1826 with
the introduction of the new  printed registers.

The reference numbers for St Matthews Windsor continued from  the previous
decade starting at 343 and run until 548 at the end  of 1825. Re-initialized
in 1826 the numbers run from B001 to B202 at the end of the decade.

To  locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical  search on the name
would be made on List 52 using code "SMW" from  which the  date  of  burial  would
be  retrieved,  secondly  using  the appropriate date, the burial would then
be located on this list.
