LIST 31 - MARRIAGES - ST MATTHEWS WINDSOR

During  this  decade  there were 202 marriages  performed  at  St Matthews, seventy
less than the previous decade. On average  just under one marriage every
fortnight.

The information recorded for each marriage is as follows:
               date
               groom
                    family name
                    Christian name
                    year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of marriage
                    age at marriage
               bride
                    family name
                    Christian name
                    year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of marriage
                    age at marriage
               place of abode
               officiating minister
               reference number

The marriages are listed in chronological order.

As explained above the age at marriage is a derived figure.

In  the original register the standard information recorded  was; date,  family
name and Christian name of both bride  and  groom, their place of abode and the
officiating minister. Information in the  register  but  not  included here
includes;  names  of  the witnesses  to  the  marriage. Interested  readers  are
urged  to consult the originals.

From  1826  onwards it was recorded who gave permission  for  the marriage; the
father to colonial born brides and the governor  to convicts. Also from 1826
the parties occasionally had their  ages recorded as well.

The  place  of  abode is only recorded for those  not  living  in Windsor.

The  Reverend John Cross continued as rector of St Matthews  from the start of
the decade until January 1828 with the Rev Matthew D Meares  performing two
marriages in October 1825. The Rev  Elijah Smith  took  over the rectorship from
February to  December  1828 with  the Rev Samuel Marsden taking the opportunity
to marry  his son Charles in June. The Rev Joseph Docker then administered  the
parish for the remainder of the decade.

The  Davids  Horton, father and son, married on the same  day  in July 1825.

The reference number would direct the reader to the entry in  the original parish
register. In this decade the numbers run from 309 to 510.

To  locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical  search on the name
would be made on Lists 27 or 28 using code "SMW" from which the date of marriage
would be retrieved, secondly using the appropriate  date,  the marriage would
then be  located  on  this list.
