LIST 57 - BURIALS - ST PETERS RICHMOND

There were 140 burials performed at St Peters during this decade. There was on
average just over one burial each month.

The information recorded for each burial is as follows:
               burial date
               death date
               Christian name
               family name
               age
               abode
civil status at time of death
               year and ship of arrival
               comments
               officiating minister
               reference number

Various miscellaneous remarks in the register have been  recorded as 'end-notes'
at the bottom of the list.

The burials are listed in chronological order.

The Rev Henry Fulton continued his chaplaincy until July 1825 when he was
replaced  in  October  by the Rev John  Cross  who  was  the incumbent until
February 1828 when the Rev Elijah Smith took over until  the  end of that year
when the Rev  Joseph  Docker  became chaplain  in  January 1829. The Rev Robert
Cartwright  performed  one  burial in February 1830. In addition there were six
burials recorded as being performed by the Roman Catholics.

Perhaps  as a sign of inter-faith co-operation six  burials  were conducted  "by
the Roman Catholics" but recorded in  the  parish register all the same.

Information  recorded  pre-1826 included; name, date  of  burial, date of death,
age, abode, whether came free or prisoner and ship of arrival (in many cases
including the year of arrival) plus the occasional  comment  as to the cause
of death. Names  of  parents were recorded for the colonial born.

With  the  introduction  of the pre-printed  forms  in  1826  the occupation
of the deceased was routinely given but the  date  of death  and ship of arrival
was no longer recorded. The  year  and ship  of arrival have been heavily
researched outside the  parish register.

For  the colonial born their year of birth and parents names  are recorded in
the ship of arrival column.

Mary Ann Grosvenor is recorded as dying in 1829 aged 15 years and that she was
colonial born. There is also a notation that she was "married". No record of
a birth has been found, nor any marriage. Perhaps her age of 15 years could be
in error.

The  reference  number would direct the reader  to  the  relevant entry  in the
original source document.

The  reference numbers for St Peters continued from the  previous decade  run
sequentially  from 0058 to 0195 at the  end  of  the decade.    Unlike   most
other  parishes  there   was   no   re-initialization  in 1826 with the introduction
of the  pre-printed registers.

To  locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical  search on the name
would be made on List 52 using code "SPR" from  which the  date  of  burial  would
be  retrieved,  secondly  using  the appropriate date, the burial would then
be located on this list.
