LIST 30 - BURIALS - ST PHILLIPS SYDNEY
There were 1,405 burials performed at St Phillips during this decade.
There were on average almost three burials every week.
The information recorded for each burial is as follows:
burial date
death date
Christian name
family name
age
civil status at time of death
year and ship of arrival
comments
reference number
The burials are listed in chronological order.
From the 31st July 1811, Rev Cowper began to record the place of birth
of the deceased and for convicts and former convicts their year and
place of trial and sentence.
From the 8th August 1811, Rev Cowper began to record whether the
'free' people at death were free because of having served out their
sentences or were pardoned, in other words the person had originally
arrived in the colony as convict.
From the 8th April 1814, Rev Cowper began to record the date of death
as well as the date of burial but regrettably ceased to record their
ships of arrival and whether 'free' people were ex-convicts. He also
ceased to record the places of birth and conviction details of
convicts and former convicts.
It should be noted that quite of lot of the entries are annotated with
"not on indent". This is because the informants may not have known
with certainty the ship of arrival, which may have been decades
earlier. In the case of women it maybe because she was buried under
her married name or her maiden name which may have differed from
that recorded on the convict shipping indents.
Information in the register not recorded here is the name of the
officiating minister.
For the colonial born their year of birth and parents names are
recorded in the ship of arrival column.
Both Edward Herard and Henry Wood are included in this list even
though they were buried in 1821 because they both died on the 31st
December 1820.
The reference numbers for St Phillips Sydney continued from the
previous decade starting at 5148 and run until 5293 when a new
sequence was commenced in 1812 starting with the number 7001. For some
reason in 1814 the number 7212 was omitted. This sequence run until
7851 when yet another sequence was commenced in 1819 starting with
the number 8001. This sequence ran until 8406 at the end of the
decade.
To locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical search on
the name would be made on List 29 using the code "SPS" from which
the date of burial would be retrieved, secondly using the appropriate
date, the death would then be located on this list.
