bride
family name
Christian name
year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of marriage
age at marriage

The marriages are listed in chronological order.
It should be pointed out that in the original register the only information
recorded was; date, family name and Christian name of both bride and groom.
Information in the register but not included here includes; the officiating
minister, names of the witnesses to the marriage and who gave consent to the
marriage (the father to colonial born brides and the governor for convicts).
Interested readers are urged to consult the originals.
With regard to the grooms; the arrival details of 31 remain unknown. With
regard to the brides; the arrival details of 32 remain unknown.
As explained above the age at marriage is a derived figure.
The Comments column occasionally records the occupation of the father although
once Rev Cowper arrived he routinely filled this column.
With the departure of Rev Hill the management of St Phillips fell to Rev Marsden
and when he left for a visit to England in 1807 Rev Fulton took over the role
until the military interregnum of the Rum Rebellion of January 1808 firstly
Charles Grimes JP and then Edward Abbott JP performed the ceremonies. At least
seven couples doubted the legality of these marriages and were remarried
by an ordained priest, these are marked with an asterix (*). The Rev Cowper
arrived in September 1809 to commence his long service at St Phillips (until
his death in 1851).
The Reference Number would direct the reader to the entry in the original parish
register. In this decade the numbers run from 292 to 450. The Rev Cowper
reinitiated his reference numbers commencing in September 1809, they start
with the letter "B" and run until B193. However the Reference Numbers are not
sequential in many cases. For example nos. 197,198,199 refer to marriages
performed in 1804 but the numbers are sequenced to 1795, numbers 265 and 290
refer to marriages in 1805 but the numbers are sequenced to 1798 and 1800
respectively and 363 refers to a marriage in 1800 but the number is sequenced
to 1807. How these situation should have come about is not clear. The number
323 was used twice.
The descendants of Andrew Lusk & Susannah Kinnock and William Hussey & Mary
Barry claim they were married at St Phillips in 1807 but no confirming record
of this marriage has been found.
To locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical search on the name
would be made on Lists 10 or 11 using code "SPS" from which the date of marriage
would be retrieved, secondly using the appropriate date, the marriage would
then be located on this list.
