LIST 63 - BURIALS - ST THOMAS PORT MACQUARIE

The  first burial was performed at St Thomas in 1824. During  the remainder of
the decade there were 80 burials performed.

The information recorded for each burial is as follows:
               burial date
               Christian name
               family name
               age
               abode
civil status at time of death
               year and ship of arrival
               comments
               minister
               reference number

Various miscellaneous remarks in the register have been  recorded as 'end-notes'
at the bottom of the list.

The burials are listed in chronological order.

The Rev Thomas Hassall was appointed as the first chaplain to the new  parish
of St Thomas Port Macquarie in 1824 where  he  stayed until December 1827 when
the Rev John Cross took over in February 1828.

Pre 1826 the information recorded for each burial included; name, date  of burial,
date of death, age, convict or free. If still  a convict the name of ship of
arrival was recorded. If free and  in the military, the regiment and rank were
often recorded.

From  1826 the information to be recorded on the new  pre-printed forms for each
burial included; reference number, date of burial, Christian name of the
deceased, family name of the deceased, age, abode,  quality or profession and
officiating minister. The  year and  ship  of arrival have been heavily
researched  outside  the parish register.

Unfortunately the first five entries in the register only  record the year of
death (1824) and nothing else. There were no  burials recorded for the year 1827.

Five headstones in the cemetery date from 1823, where the burials are recorded
is unknown.

For  the colonial born their year of birth and parents names  are recorded in
the ship of arrival column.

The  reference  number would direct the reader  to  the  relevant entry in the
original source document. Unlike most other parishes the  numbering system was
re-initialized in 1828 rather  than  in 1826 with introduction of the new
pre-printed registers.

The reference numbers for St Thomas run sequentially from 0001 to 0060 then from
B001 to B021 at the end of the decade.

To  locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical  search on the name
would be made on List 52 using code "STPM" from which the  date  of  burial  would
be  retrieved,  secondly  using  the appropriate date, the burial would then
be located on this list.
