LIST 3 - BIRTHS - CHILDS NAME ORDER

This third reference list, titled "Births of the First Generation -
Child's  Name  Order" lists births for children  born  in  the colony
from 1788 until 1800 as well as childhood arrivals for the same period
of time.

For  a  full description of the information  presented  for  each child
refer to List 1.

The list is ordered firstly alphabetically on the Christian names of
the child, then secondly chronologically on the date of  birth of  the
child, then thirdly on the family name of the  father  if two  or more
children should be born on the same date. This  list is  particularly
useful in helping to identify a child  were  the Christian name is
known but where the family name is uncertain or if  it is not known
if the surname is either the married name  or the  maiden  name of
the mother or the surname of  a  stepfather. This  listing  has  been
most useful in  sorting  out  the  true identity  of  several  children
found  in  the  various   source documents that form the basis of this
work.

Being  both an English and a Christian colony the names given  to the
children are of no real surprise, at least not to those of  a similar
English/Christian background. The five most common  names for boys
and girls are listed in the table below.

Table 3.1 - Five Most Popular Names

               Male                Female
               ---------------------------------
               John      169       Mary      223
               William   151       Elizabeth 191
               James     109       Ann       113
               Thomas     96       Sarah     110
               George     60       Jane       40

It would appear the children were either given a very common name or
a rare one. Of the boys; 585 (or 61%) had one of the five most common
boys names and of the girls; even more markedly, 677  (or 66%)  had
one of the five most common girls names. On  the  other hand  68
children had a relatively rare name. Table  3.2.  below lists  the
names which appeared just once - 36  such  'one  off' names for boys
and 33 such 'one off' names for girls.

Of  those children who were given two Christian names,  for  boys the
most common couplet was William James and for girls Mary Ann.

John Matthew Hunter Baxter, James Thomas John Bean, George  Simon
William  Robley, James George Evan Thorn all had three  Christian names,
Elizabeth  A  E Johnson had one Christian  name  and  two initials.

This list contains 1,963 names. It does NOT contain the births of 15
children whose Christian names are unknown. This mainly  occurs with
children  born  overseas, where  the  child's  presence  is recorded
on the shipping list but not their actual name.
