LIST 9 - BAPTISMS - CHRIST CHURCH NEWCASTLE
There were 231 baptisms performed at Christ Church Newcastle during the
decade, although 11 refer to children born before 1821, plus 22 performed
after 1830 for children born between the years 1821 and 1830. On average there
were about two baptisms performed per month over the decade.
The information recorded for each child is exactly as described for both the
pre and post 1826 presentations of St Phillips Sydney in List 3.
The list is presented in chronological order by date of baptism then
alphabetically by father's surname.
With regard to the fathers; the arrival details of a further 19 remain unknown
whilst in 10 cases the ship of arrival remains unknown (13%).
Eighty were convicts or former convicts (34%), 40 were soldiers or former
soldiers (17%), 99 came free (43%) and 16 were colonial born (7%).
With regard to the mothers; the names of fifteen were not recorded and
the arrival details of eighteen remain unknown whilst in eight cases the
ship of arrival remains unknown (12%).
Forty nine were convicts or former convicts (21%), 138 came free (60%) and
46 were colonial born (20%).
Ten (4%) of the births were illegitimate.
There were five duplicate entries.
The Rev George Augustus Middleton was appointed the first chaplain to
the parish in 1821 and continued until he resigned his commission in 1827 after
a dispute with Archdeacon Scott. The Rev Frederick W Wilkinson then took over
until he was suspended from duty in 1830. The Rev Charles Pleydell Neale Wilton
then took over the chaplaincy. Rev Middleton still managed to perform two
baptisms in 1828 and three in 1829. Archdeacon Thomas Scott performed seven
baptisms in 1827 and six in 1828. The missionary Rev Lancelot E Threlkeld
baptized two of his own children, one in 1827 and one in 1829. The Rev Richard
Hill performed three baptisms in 1828. Lieutenant Bale of the 57th Regiment
performed on baptism in 1828 and one in 1829. The minister is unknown in three
cases in 1828. The year 1830 saw a veritable cornucopia of ministers officiating;
Rev Threlkeld two, Rev Hill five, Rev Thomas Sharpe one, Sir Edward Parry
JP performed twenty five, and George Middleton, son of the minister, performed
two in his capacity as parish clerk.
The years for 1821 to 1825 could not be located on the microfilm held at
National Library but once again a reasonable approximation of the entries
can be recreated from the Kerrison James Index. The Newcastle Family History
Society's "Christ Church, Newcastle, NSW, 1804-1900" was also helpful in
providing information on the place of residence and officiating minister.
After 1826 the occupation of the father was also recorded.
The reference number would direct the reader to the relevant entry in the
original source document. The numbering system was re-initialized in 1826 with
the introduction of the new printed registers. The number 100 is used twice.
The year 1829 ends with number 108 but 1830 starts with 160 but are then very
jumbled, the numbers 109 to 142 were either missed for some reason or 43 entries
are missing. Also in 1830 the Rev Wilkinson seems to have started a separate
register with a new numbering system.
Entries on this list have the reference identifier "CCN" on List 1. To locate
an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical search on the name would be
made on List 1 from which the date of baptism would be retrieved, secondly using
the appropriate date, the baptism would be located on this list and finally
an alphabetical search on the name would be made on the baptismal date if
there should be more than one entry for that date.
