LIST 1 - BIRTHS - FATHERS SURNAME ORDER
There were 3,142 births recorded during this decade which is not quite double
the number for the previous 'decade'.
The information recorded for each child includes:
date of birth
date of baptism
Christian name
father's Christian name
father's family name
father's year of arrival in the colony
father's ship of arrival in the colony
father's status upon arrival in the colony
mother's Christian name
mother's maiden name
mother's year of arrival in the colony
mother's ship of arrival in the colony
mother's status upon arrival in the colony
parent's civil status at the time of the child's birth
parent's marital status at the time of the child's birth
parent's year & country/church of marriage where applicable
date of death
reference identifier
The births are listed primarily in alphabetical order on the name of the father
and then secondly in chronological order on the date of birth for family groups.
The date of death is an complimentary piece of information derived from
my earlier publication "Born in the English Colony of New South Wales" further
details of which can be found in that publication. In some instances the date
of death is unknown but the year of departure is recorded, becoming 'dead' to
the colony as it were.
With regard to the fathers, the identities of 74% have been found. The
children whose fathers are unknown are not recorded on this list. There were
1,686 convicts or former convicts (54%), 446 were soldiers or former soldiers
(14%) and 295 came free (8%). Finally there were 6 colonial born fathers.
With regard to the children 52.4% were male and 47.6% were female, 40.7%
were legitimate, 46.0% were illegitimate.
Just over half (53%) of these births were found in the various church baptismal
registers in existence at the time. Just under a third (30%) the information
is derived from Norfolk Island records and from the Pioneer Register Project.
The remainder come from the early colonial Musters and the 1828 Census of New
South Wales, from burial records whose parents were not able to be identified,
and from records for Van Diemen's Land.
The Muster of 1802 records the births of 91 children for the year 1801 (out of
a total of 118 births identified in this project or 77%). However it is not
always clear if it is the birth date or baptismal date that is being recorded.
It is known for certain that at least 14 (15%) relate to children born in
the previous decade. Of the remainder 26 cannot at this time be assigned to
any known family, especially as 15 have no Christian name recorded.
There were ten births reported in the Sydney Gazette, only two of which were
not also recorded in the various church baptismal registers, they being the
twin sons of Captain Francis Lewis of the New South Wales Corps, born at
the Military Barracks in Sydney on the 22nd March 1809.
