The information recorded for each child includes:

father's ship of arrival in the colony
father's status upon arrival in the colony

parent's marital status at the time of the child's birth
parent's year & country/church of marriage where applicable
date of death

The births are listed primarily in alphabetical order on the name of the father and then
secondly in chronological order on the date of birth for family groups.
The date of death is an complimentary piece of information derived from my earlier
publication "Born in the English Colony of New South Wales" further details of which can
be found in that publication. In some instances the date of death is unknown but the year
of departure is recorded, becoming 'dead' to the colony as it were.
With regard to the fathers, the identities of 86% have been found. The children whose
fathers are unknown are not recorded on this list. There were 978 convicts or former convicts
(55%), 391 were soldiers or former soldiers (22%) and 172 came free (10%).
With regard to the children 48.3% were male and 51.7% were female, 45.5% were legitimate,
48.0% were illegitimate.
The majority of these births were found in the two church baptismal registers in
existence at the time, St Phillips Sydney and St Johns Parramatta. The next major sources
were records of birth for Norfolk Island and information derived from the Pioneer Register
Project. Miscellaneous sources included 17 children baptised later in life in other
churches in the colony, 47 children from burial records whose parents were not able to
be identified and 58 children from the early colonial Musters and the 1828 Census of New
South Wales.
