LIST 1 - BIRTHS - FATHERS NAME ORDER
This list records 8,502 births for the decade 1821 to 1830. Unlike the
previous three volumes in this series they refer to New South Wales only
as Van Diemens Land separated from the mother colony in 1824.
The information recorded for each child includes:
date of birth
date of baptism
Christian name
father's Christian name
father's family name
father's year of arrival in the colony
father's ship of arrival in the colony
father's status upon arrival in the colony
mother's Christian name
mother's maiden name
mother's year of arrival in the colony
mother's ship of arrival in the colony
mother's status upon arrival in the colony
parent's civil status at the time of the child's birth
parent's marital status at the time of the child's birth
parent's year & country/church of marriage where applicable
date of death
reference identifier
The births are listed primarily in alphabetical order on the name of the father
and then secondly in chronological order on the date of birth for family groups.
The date of death is a complimentary piece of information derived from personal
research. In some instances the date of death is unknown but the year of
departure is recorded, becoming 'dead' to the colony as it were.
The data was collected from church registers, both the "Pioneer Register
Project" and the "Convict Families That Made Australia Project", the 1822 Muster
and the 1828 Census, as listed in Table 1.1 below.
The number of baptisms identified for the decade is 7,235 but 151 of these were
duplicates and 561 refer to children born before 1821 leaving a total of 6,523
baptisms. To this number must be added the 694 children baptised after 1830.
From this number must be subtracted the 62 baptisms referring to children born
before arrival in the colony. A further 1,007 births were collected from the
"Pioneer Register Project" and 88 from the "Convict Families That Made
Australia Project". The deaths of 213 children could not be linked to any
know family with any certainty, whilst 8 children in the 1822 Muster and 141
children in the 1828 Census likewise have not been able to be linked to any
known family, quite a few of these were orphans, orphans in life and orphans
in history.
Thus the total number of births identified for the decade is 8,385 of whom
83% are known to have been baptized.
With regard to the fathers, the identities of 86% have been found. The
95 (1%) children whose fathers are unknown are not recorded on this list.
There were 47% convicts or former convicts, 11% were soldiers or former
soldiers, 17% came free and 12% were colonial born.
With regard to the children 21% were illegitimate.
There are 148 duplicate and 3 triplicate entries on the list. These have
been preserved on the list in order to be able to locate the relevant baptism
on the duplicated church register.
