LIST 17 - DE FACTO RELATIONSHIPS - MALE NAME ORDER

There were 487 defacto relationships recorded during this  decade which is about
5% less than for the previous 'decade'.

The information recorded for each defacto relationship is as follows:
               year
               groom
                    family name
                    Christian name
                    year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of relationship
               bride
                    family name
                    Christian name
                    year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of relationship

They are listed in alphabetical order on the name of the 'groom'.

With  regard to the 'grooms', identities of 81% have been  found. In  addition
the ships of arrival are unknown for five  convicts, Michael  Purdon  who came
free and Christopher Grogen who  was  a soldier.  There  were 311 convicts or
former convicts  (64%),  49 were  soldiers or former soldiers (10%), 23 were
seamen (5%)  and 11 came free (2%).

This is the most difficult category to define and identify.

Only those unions which produced children are listed. The  unions are presumed
to have begun one year before the birth of the first recorded child.

Whilst  some of these unions were of life long duration, it  also undoubtedly
true that some extended no further than one night  of passion !

Those  couples who eventually went on to marry are excluded  from this list to
save on duplication with the marriage lists.
