LIST 5 - BAPTISMS - OTHER CHURCHES
There were only two churches in the colony during the first 'decade'; St Phillips
Sydney & St Johns Parramatta, and their baptisms are listed separately. But because some
children were baptised some time after birth, in some cases several decades later, these
baptisms are collected into a separate list, ordered by date of founding of the respective
parishes and then chronologically within each parish.
There were 83 other baptisms recorded for children born during this 'decade'.
The information recorded for each child includes:
date of baptism
date of birth
Christian name
father's Christian name
father's family name
father's year of arrival in the colony
father's ship of arrival in the colony
father's status upon arrival in the colony
mother's Christian name
mother's maiden name
mother's year of arrival in the colony
mother's ship of arrival in the colony
mother's status upon arrival in the colony
parent's civil status at the time of the child's birth
parent's marital status at the time of the child's birth
parent's year & country/church of marriage where applicable
reference number
Quite a few children were baptised on Norfolk Island when the Reverend Henry Fulton
was posted to the island between 1801 and 1806, there not being a resident chaplain before
that time. The other churches presented in this list include: St Davids Hobart (founded
1803), St Matthews Windsor (founded 1810), St Peters Richmond (founded 1811), St Johns
Launceston (founded 1811) and St Marys Sydney (founded 1820).
Readers will notice that for St Marys Sydney, the colony's first Catholic parish, there
are in fact eight entries listed however all but two of these were rebaptisms from earlier
Protestant parishes.
