LIST 9 - BAPTISMS - OTHER CHURCHES
Numerous children born between 1801 and 1810 were baptized after 1810 in
churches other than those discussed in the previous lists. This "other
churches" list identified 96 of them.
The information recorded for each child includes:
date of baptism
date of birth
Christian name
father's Christian name
father's family name
father's year of arrival in the colony
father's ship of arrival in the colony
father's status upon arrival in the colony
mother's Christian name
mother's maiden name
mother's year of arrival in the colony
mother's ship of arrival in the colony
mother's status upon arrival in the colony
parent's civil status at the time of the child's birth
parent's marital status at the time of the child's birth
parent's year & country/church of marriage where applicable
reference number
The list is presented firstly in alphabetical order by name of church, next
in chronological order by date of baptism, then in chronological order by date
of birth
It should be noted that considerably more information is presented than
will be found in the original church register, being the result of decades
of research, principally associated with the Pioneer Register Project. Arrival
data for the parents were rarely recorded in the original documents nor was
their marital status.
Where the father's surname has a second name separated by a slash '/', the surname
after the slash is how the name was spelt in the original document or if second
name is substantially different it refers to an alias. Where the mother's surname
has a second name separated by a slash, the surname after the slash is her
married name at the time of the recording being made if she was married more
than once.
The reference number would direct the reader to the entry in the original source
document.
After 1810 there was a veritable blossoming of churches in the colony. St
Matthews Windsor and St Johns Launceston have already been discussed. Apart
from the remaining four churches from Macquarie's "five towns";
Christ Church Castlereagh (1815)
St James Pitt Town (1825)
St Johns Wilberforce (1826)
St Peters Richmond (1814)
there were also;
Christ Church Newcastle (1818)
Holy Trinity Kelso (1826)
St James Sydney (1824)
St Lukes Liverpool (1811)
St Peters Campbelltown (1821)
St Thomas Port Macquarie (1824)
St Thomas Sackville Reach (1821)
all of the Anglican communion.
The first Presbyterian church was also founded, Scots Kirk Sydney (1826) as was
the first Catholic church, St Marys Sydney (1820).
It will be noted that many of these baptisms were in fact duplicates.
Mary Ann Rock was previously baptized at St Johns Parramatta, Edward Fletcher
at St Phillips Sydney.
Twenty of the 38 baptisms at St Marys Sydney were rebaptisms of children
originally baptized into the Anglican communion. Similarly Athelia Palmer
was rebaptized into the Wesleyan-Methodist communion.
Anthony Cottrell was baptized at Sorell Van Diemens Land and James Pillenger
at New Norfolk in Van Diemens Land and Eleanor Boswell at Clarence Town in
Van Diemens Land at the age of thirty five being the oldest of these "late"
baptisms.
Apart from these baptisms there may well have been others which hopefully may
come to light under the stimulus of the interest created by this treatise.
