LIST 23 - BURIALS - ST DAVIDS HOBART

There were  98 burials performed at St Davids during this decade. The  first
burial recorded was that of convict Thomas  Smith  on 13th  March  1803 at sea
on board 'HMs Calcutta'.

The information recorded for each burial is as follows:
               date
               family name
               Christian name
               age
civil status at time of death
               year and ship of arrival
               comments
               reference number

The deaths are listed in chronological order.

The Rev. Knopwood conducted nine burials at sea before the  fleet reached Port
Phillip Bay. There followed another eighteen burials at  Port  Phillip  Bay before
the settlement  was  moved  to  the Derwent  in Van Diemens Land. It is not certain
how three  deaths at  Risdon Cove in early March 1804 could be recorded before
all burials had been finalised at Port Phillip Bay.

The  Rev. Knopwood kept very full records including age at  death and ship of
arrival.

For  the colonial born their year of birth and parents names  are recorded in
the ship of arrival column.

The  identity of all the deceased is known with the exception  of Mary  Mack,
Robert  Mander, William  Smith,  Thomas  Dawson  and Elizabeth Hall.

For  some reason the reference numbers are not always  in  proper sequence.

To  locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical  search on  the name
would be made on List 19 using the code  "SDH"  from which  the date of death
would be retrieved, secondly  using  the appropriate date, the death would then
be located on this list.
