LIST 13 - MARRIAGES - ST JOHNS PARRAMATTA

There  were  257  marriages performed at  St  Johns  during  this decade. On
average almost five marriages per week.

The information recorded for each marriage is as follows:
               date
               groom
                    family name
                    Christian name
                    year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of marriage
                    age at marriage
               bride
                    family name
                    Christian name
                    year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of marriage
                    age at marriage
               comments
               reference number

The marriages are listed in chronological order.

It  should be pointed out that in the original register the  only information
recorded was; date, family name and Christian name of both  bride  and  groom.
Information in  the  register  but  not included  here includes; the officiating
minister, names  of  the witnesses  to the marriage and who gave consent to  the
marriage (the  father  to  colonial  born  brides  and  the  governor   to convicts).
Interested readers are urged to consult the originals.

With  regard  to  the grooms; the arrival details  of  22  remain unknown.  Richard
Barnett was known to be an emancipist  but  the ship of arrival is unknown.

With  regard  to  the brides; the arrival details  of  15  remain unknown whilst
Sarah Ash was came free and Ann Farr was a convict their ships of arrival are
unknown.

As explained above the age at marriage is a derived figure.

The  Comments column occasionally records the place of  residence of the father,
even less frequenty of the mother. This column has also  been  used  to record
when  the  officiating  minister  was someone other than Rev Samuel Marsden.

After his return from Norfolk Island in 1806 Rev Fulton performed several
marriages at St Johns and stood in for Rev Marsden  when the   latter  visited
England,  at  least  until  the   military interregnum which followed the Rum
Rebellion of January 1808. For the two years 1808 and 1809 ceremonies were
performed by  Anthony Fenn Kemp JP and James Mileham JP. At least three couples
doubted the legality of these marriages and were remarried by an ordained priest,
these are marked with an asterix (*).

The exact date in 1803 of the marriage of Thomas Upton and  Sarah Pigg  has not
been recorded.

The descendants of John Moss and Elizabeth Hinks claim they  were married at
St Johns on 8th April 1810 but no confirming record of this marriage has been
found.

The reference number would direct the reader to the entry in  the original parish
register. In this decade the numbers run from 215 to  469.

To  locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical  search on the name
would be made on Lists 10 or 11 using code "SJP" from which the date of marriage
would be retrieved, secondly using the appropriate  date,  the marriage would
then be  located  on  this list.
