LIST 72 - BURIALS - SCOTS KIRK SYDNEY
The first burial was performed at Scots Kirk on the 17th March 1826. During
the remainder of the decade there were 41 burials performed.
The information recorded for each burial is as follows:
burial date
death date
Christian name
family name
age
abode
civil status at time of death
year and ship of arrival
comments
officiating minister
reference number
Various miscellaneous remarks in the register have been recorded as 'end-notes'
at the bottom of the list.
The burials are listed in chronological order.
The Reverend John Dunmore Lang arrived in the colony in May 1823 on board
'Brixton' as the second Presbyterian chaplain appointed to the colony (the Rev
Archibald Macarthur having arrived in Van Diemens Land in December 1822).
Unfortunately his earliest records appear to have been lost since his first
recorded burial is not until the 17th March 1826. He was replaced in September
1830 by the Rev John McGarvie who took over the running of the parish whilst
Lang made one of his many return trips to Scotland.
The information recorded in this burial register includes: name, date of burial,
age, abode, status and occupation. Starting from 1828 the date of death is also
recorded. There is also column for ship of arrival but it is completed only
for the burial of William Hyatt who arrived aboard the "Lord Eldon".
The first burial for William Rae is duplicated in St James Sydney register, but
this is most likely an error since it would be unusual for a Presbyterian
minister to record a burial in an Anglican parish.
For the colonial born their year of birth and parents names are recorded in
the ship of arrival column.
The reference number would direct the reader to the relevant entry in the
original source document. The reference numbers for Scots Kirk run sequentially
from 0001 to 0042 at the end of the decade.
To locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical search on the name
would be made on List 52 using code "SKS" from which the date of burial would
be retrieved, secondly using the appropriate date, the burial would then
be located on this list.
