LIST 6 - BAPTISMS - ST LUKES LIVERPOOL
There were 207 baptisms performed at St Lukes Liverpool during the decade,
although 15 refer to children born before 1821, plus 20 performed after
1830 for children born between the years 1821 and 1830. On average there were
about two baptisms performed per month over the decade.
The information recorded for each child is exactly as described for both the
pre and post 1826 presentations of St Phillips Sydney in List 3.
The list is presented in chronological order by date of baptism then
alphabetically by father's surname.
With regard to the fathers; the names of two were not recorded and the arrival
details of a further nine remain unknown whilst in three cases the ship of
arrival remains unknown (8%).
One hundred and twenty four were convicts or former convicts (59%), 12
were soldiers or former soldiers (6%), 47 came free (23%) and 36 were colonial
born (17%).
With regard to the mothers; the names of six were not recorded and the arrival
details of seven remain unknown whilst in four cases the ship of arrival remains
unknown (5%).
Sixty were convicts or former convicts (29%), 81 came free (39%) and 78 were
colonial born (38%).
Twenty two (11%) of the births were illegitimate.
There were two duplicate entries.
The Rev Robert Cartwright was the minister for the whole of this decade. Rev
John Butler performed one baptism in December 1821, Rev Samuel Marsden
performed two in October 1826 and Archdeacon Thomas Scott performed five in
July 1827.
The entry for John King (15th July 1827) contained no date of birth nor
names of parents. This could be an adult baptism or a native baptism or even
a duplicate of John King born in 1825.
The original church register records the dates of baptism and birth, child's
name, father's names, mother's Christian name (surname if not married)
and place of residence. From 1826 onwards the occupation of the father was
also recorded.
Where the father's surname has a second name separated by a slash '/', the surname
after the slash is how the name was spelt in the original document or if second
name is substantially different it refers to an alias. Where the mother's surname
has a second name separated by a slash, the surname after the slash is her
married name at the time of the recording being made if she was married more
than once.
The reference number would direct the reader to the relevant entry in the
original source document. For some reason the reference numbers from 202
to 210 were skipped. The numbering system was re-initialized in 1826 with the
introduction of the new printed registers.
Entries on this list have the reference identifier "SLL" on List 1. To locate
an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical search on the name would be
made on List 1 from which the date of baptism would be retrieved, secondly using
the appropriate date, the baptism would be located on this list and finally
an alphabetical search on the name would be made on the baptismal date if
there should be more than one entry for that date.
