LIST 20 - BURIALS - ST PHILLIPS SYDNEY

There  were  702  burials performed at St  Phillips  during  this decade. There
were on average about six burials every month.

The information recorded for each burial is as follows:
               date
               family name
               Christian name
               age
civil status at time of death
               year and ship of arrival
               comments
               reference number

The burials are listed in chronological order.

It  should be pointed out that in the original register the  only information
recorded was; date, family name, Christian name  and very  occasionally  a
comment as to status or  cause  of  death. Information in the register not recorded
here is the name of  the officiating minister.

For  the colonial born their year of birth and parents names  are recorded in
the ship of arrival column.

The  identities of 70% of the deceased have been found. Of  those whose  identities
have  not been found  56  were  infants  whose parents have not been identified,
26 were seaman whose ship could not  be  located  and 6 were convicts whose  ship
could  not  be located.

In June 1801 two convicts from the 'Earl Cornwallis' were  buried but  were  not
named.

The  age  at death has been able to be calculated  in  283  (40%) cases.

The register sadly records that seven people died of drowning.

The  sequential  numbers for St Phillips Sydney ended  at  number 1231  in December
1803. For some reason the number 1119 has  been omitted.  There  were  then  no
sequential  numbers  used  in  the register  until the arrival of Rev. Cowper
to administer  to  the parish  in  August 1809. A series of numbers have been
added  in this  text  starting  with 3001 and ending with  3342.  The  Rev. Cowper's
numbers commence with 5001.

There  were two duplicate burials in July 1802, James  Smith  and Edward Whelan.

When  Rev  Marsden was responsible for both St  Phillips  and  St Johns  several
burials were duplicated in both church  registers, an example being Margaret
Anderson who died in October 1803. When this happens entries are generally
assigned to St Johns.

To  locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical  search on  the name
would be made on List 19 using the code  "SPS"  from which  the date of death
would be retrieved, secondly  using  the appropriate date, the death would then
be located on this list.
