LIST 8 - MARRIAGES - ST PHILLIPS SYDNEY
There were 274 marriages performed at St Phillips during this 'decade'. The first being
on the 10th February 1788 between convicts William Parr and Mary McCormack although
four other couples were married on the same day. There were on average about three marriages
every two months.
The information recorded for each marriage is as follows:
date
groom
family name
Christian name
year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of marriage
age at marriage
bride
family name
Christian name
year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of marriage
age at marriage
reference number
The marriages are listed in chronological order.
It should be pointed out that in the original register the only information recorded was;
date, family name and Christian name of both bride and groom. Information in the register
but not included here includes; the officiating minister, names of the witnesses to
the marriage and who gave consent to the marriage (the father to colonial born brides
and the governor for convicts). Interested readers are urged to consult the originals.
With regard to the grooms; the arrival details of 13 remain unknown. There were 211
convicts or former convicts, 15 were Marines or former Marines, 24 were New South Wales
Corpsmen of former New South Wales Corpsmen, 11 came free (mostly seamen).
With regard to the brides; the arrival details of 15 remain unknown whilst Jane Taylor
was a convict but her ship of arrival is unknown. There were 234 convicts or former convicts
and 15 came free (mostly soldiers wives).
As explained above the age at marriage is a derived figure.
The register for some reason records the marriage of John Forrester to Susannah
Gibbs twice, firstly on the 25th May 1788 and again on the 15th December 1788.
The reference number would direct the reader to the entry in the original parish register.
The sequencing of the reference numbers is quite chaotic with years and months often way
out of order, making one wonder just how the register was compiled. For some reason
13 numbers were omitted; 34-43,76,195,287. Numbers 197-199,265,290 refer to marriages which
occured in the next decade.
To locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical search on the name would be
made on List 6 from which the date of marriage would be retrieved, secondly using the
appropriate date, the marriage would then be located on this list.
