LIST 39 - MARRIAGES - ST THOMAS PORT MACQUARIE
The first marriage was performed at St Thomas on the 17th May 1824 by the
Reverend Thomas Hassall. There were only twelve marriages performed at St
Thomas up until the end of 1830.
The information recorded for each marriage is as follows:
date
groom
family name
Christian name
year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of marriage
age at marriage
bride
family name
Christian name
year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of marriage
age at marriage
officiating minister
reference number
The marriages are listed in chronological order.
The settlement at Port Macquarie was founded in 1824. The Rev Hassall
performed only nine marriages up to 1826 which suggests that he may only have
been a visiting chaplain.
There was then a gap until 1829 when the Rev John Cross performed two marriages
in 1829 and one in 1830.
In the original register the standard information recorded was; date, family
name and Christian name of both bride and groom, civil status and the
officiating minister. Information in the register but not included here
includes; names of the witnesses to the marriage.
For the entries in 1824 the Rev Hassall interestingly recorded for the convicts
at least, the ship and date that brought them to Port Macquarie, thereafter,
the ship that brought them to the colony.
As explained above the age at marriage is a derived figure.
The reference number would direct the reader to the entry in the original parish
register.
To locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical search on the name
would be made on Lists 27 or 28 using code "STPM" from which the date of marriage
would be retrieved, secondly using the appropriate date, the marriage would
then be located on this list.
