LIST 24 - MARRIAGES - CHRIST CHURCH CASTLEREAGH
The first marriage was performed at Christ Church on the 12th
September 1814 by the Rev Henry Fulton. Up until the end of 1820 there
were 56 marriages performed at Christ Church.
The information recorded for each marriage is as follows:
date
groom
family name
Christian name
year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of marriage
age at marriage
bride
family name
Christian name
year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of marriage
age at marriage
reference number
The marriages are listed in chronological order.
The Reverend Henry Fulton was the first rector of Christ Church, he
was quite a busy man being the rector at St Peters Richmond during
this period as well.
Regrettably the first few pages of the marriage register have been
lost covering the first 24 marriages. Number 25 (6th October 1817)
is the first to survive. Fortunately the State Archives records
of the Kerrison James Index do have backup copies of this early period
and the information has been retrieved from this source.
It should be pointed out that in the original register the only
information recorded was; date, family name and Christian name of both
bride and groom. Information in the register but not included
here includes; the officiating minister, names of the witnesses to
the marriage and who gave consent to the marriage (the father to
colonial born brides and the governor to convicts). Interested
readers are urged to consult the originals.
As explained above the age at marriage is a derived figure.
The reference number would direct the reader to the entry in the
original parish register. In this decade the numbers run from 121to
175. Why the sequence starts at 121 is uncertain. The marriage of
William Bailey to Margaret Bradley-Jones was not assigned a
reference number for some reason.
To locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical search on
the name would be made on Lists 15 or 16 using code "CCC" from which
the date of marriage would be retrieved, secondly using the
appropriate date, the marriage would then be located on this list.
