LIST 17 - MARRIAGES - ST PHILLIPS SYDNEY

There  were  515 marriages performed at St Phillips  during  this decade.
On average about one marriage every week.

The information recorded for each marriage is as follows:
               date
               groom
                    family name
                    Christian name
                    year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of marriage
                    age at marriage
               bride
                    family name
                    Christian name
                    year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of marriage
                    age at marriage
               comments
               reference number

The marriages are listed in chronological order.

It  should be pointed out that in the original register the  only
information recorded was; date, family name and Christian name of both
bride  and  groom.  Information in  the  register  but  not included
here includes; the officiating minister, names  of  the witnesses  to
the marriage and who gave consent to  the  marriage (the  father  to
colonial  born  brides  and  the  governor  for convicts). Interested
readers are urged to consult the originals.

As explained above the age at marriage is a derived figure.

The  Rev  Cowper arrived in September 1809 to commence  his  long
service at St Phillips (until his death in 1851). He continued to
record the occupation of the grooms in the Comments column.  This
column has also been used to record when the officiating minister was
someone other than Rev William Cowper.

The Reference Number would direct the reader to the entry in  the
original  parish register. In this decade the numbers start  from B194
and  run to B249. The Rev Cowper started  a  new  numbering system
in  1812 starting with the letter "C", this  series  runs from  C001
until C341. In 1819 he started yet  another  numbering system  starting
with the letter "D", this series runs from  D001 to D118 at the end
of 1820.

For  some  reason  the Rev Samuel Marsden  married  John  Eyre  & Susannah
Wilshire on 25th August 1812. Unlike Cowper he did  not record the
occupation of the groom.

With  the arrival of the 46th Regiment, the  regimental  chaplain
Benjamin  Vale started performing occasional marriages: in  1815; 12th
June,  20th June & 15th September, in 1816;  23rd  January. Like Marsden
he did not record the occupation of the groom.

In  November  of  1819  the Rev  Richard  Hill  began  performing
marriages almost on an alternate basis with the Rev Cowper.

To  locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical  search on
the name would be made on Lists 15 or 16 using code "SPS" from which
the date of marriage would be retrieved, secondly using the
appropriate  date,  the marriage would then be  located  on  this list.
