LIST 9 - BIRTHS FROM BURIALS
In checking the burial registers for St Phillips Sydney and St Johns Parramatta
for the deaths of the First Generation, 39 names were left with no corresponding
baptism and consequently no known parents. Those 39 names are listed here in
surname order along with the date of burial and church of registration.
These Births from Burials account for 2% of the First Generation.
For once the numbers are fairly evenly divided between males and females (20
& 19 respectively).
There were 31 names from St Phillips and 8 from St Johns.
Where the surname as a second name separated by a slash '/', the surname after
the slash is an alternative spelling interpretation of how the name was spelt
on the original document.

Unfortunately, in the period under discussion, the original church burial
registers only recorded that the burial related to an infant - no age, no date
of birth. However since their parents took the trouble to give these children
a Christian burial, it would be a reasonable assumption to make that in most
cases the child died soon after birth before having a chance to be
baptized. Following on from that assumption is that the year of death is
probably the year of birth.
